abstract = "The need to update information for Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) and considering the ease of obtaining orbital images and
Remote Sensing data, implies an increasing need to obtain tools
that can translate data from Remote Sensing, normally orbital
images, in information, this work has as main objective to compare
the two main active contour models, which are: parametric and
geometric, known as Snakes and Level Set, respectively, to extract
water bodies in orbital images. The proposed methodology was to
make a qualitative comparison in this work. The images used to
apply the models were binarized according to the well-known method
of Otsu (1979), creating the same conditions for comparisons. The
application of the active contour models were initialized with
points, for the Level Set and small initial contours for the
Snakes, always in the same positions. The methodology was applied
in clippings of a scene taken in the Pantanal region of the State
of Mato Grosso, with the PAN sensor, of the satellite CBERS-4, of
April 2016. The results show that the application of the contour
is directly linked to Characteristic of the feature in question
and show that both models have reasonable behavior, given the
                         characteristics of the features.",
